Safflower Powder
🔶 SAFFLOWER (Carthamus tinctorius)
Also known as Hong Hua (红花) in Traditional Chinese Medicine, safflower is a thorny, thistle-like plant native to the Middle East and Asia. It's cultivated for its vibrant orange-red flowers (buds), antioxidant-rich leaves, and oil-laden seeds.
🌺 Safflower Flowers (Buds) – Primary Healing Component
Key Actions:
Invigorates blood & disperses blood stasis
Relieves pain (especially gynecological)
Promotes menstruation
Anti-inflammatory & anticoagulant
Antiviral & antimicrobial
Emmenagogue (brings on menstruation)
Cardiotonic & vasodilatory
Primary Uses:
Gynecological relief: Strongly used in TCM to treat fibroids, endometriosis, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, and lochia retention postpartum. It moves stagnant blood and breaks up clots.
Cardiovascular health: Improves blood circulation, lowers blood pressure, reduces cholesterol, and protects against arteriosclerosis.
Anti-inflammatory: Used in herbal liniments, compresses, and teas to reduce swelling, cysts, and uterine masses.
Wound healing: Buds can be ground and applied as a poultice to promote healing in bruises, boils, or abscesses.
Immune modulation: Exhibits antiviral and antibacterial activity (used in chronic infections or viral conditions).
How to Use the Buds/Flowers:
Infusion/Tea: 1–2 tsp dried flowers per cup. Steep 10–15 minutes. Best for menstrual disorders and internal detoxification.
Tincture: 1:5 ratio in 40% alcohol. Dose: 2–4 mL up to 3x/day. Especially helpful for fibroid protocols or blood stagnation.
Poultice/Compress: Crushed dried flowers infused in warm water or oil and applied to swollen or fibrotic areas.
Bath Soak: Combine with mugwort, rose, and myrrh for womb-cleansing soaks or sitz baths.
Yoni Steam: Combined with dan shen, lavender, and motherwort to promote circulation in the uterus.
🌿 Safflower Leaves – Underutilized but Therapeutic
Key Actions:
Mild blood purifying and detoxifying
Bitter tonic (enhances digestion, bile flow)
Supports liver function
Anti-edema (reduces fluid buildup)
Mildly diuretic and laxative
Primary Uses:
Liver & detox support: Helpful in removing metabolic waste, toxins, and excess hormones through improved liver function — key in treating estrogen dominance.
Fluid regulation: Reduces bloating, water retention, and tissue congestion; helpful in lymphatic congestion around fibroids.
Mild laxative effect: Stimulates bile secretion and enhances natural elimination.
How to Use the Leaves:
Infusion/Tea: Combine 1 tsp dried leaves with peppermint or ginger. Use for liver, digestion, and fluid retention.
Tincture: Less common, but can be made with 40% alcohol. Use for liver-cleansing blends.
Poultice: Fresh leaves can be wilted and applied to external swellings, fibroids, or tender lymph nodes.
Oil Infusion: Can be infused in oil and used for massage on swollen or inflamed tissues.
